Description of project 1: Context and Justification In Togo today all the districts have been touched by the aids warning. A recent enquiry led by the authorities shows that each Togolese has at least once heard the Aids disease mentioned. However, the sad reality is that the rate of HIV prevalence in Togo has continued to increase:
Some people insist that the situation is not alarming. We, however, are concerned by this steady increase. According to the report of UNAIDS, the principal means of contamination is still by sexual transmission and youth are those most affected by this pandemic. It appears that the majority of young people do not follow through with the responsible behaviour that has been taught, or, quite simply, are not protecting themselves at all. The observed increased rate of “accidental” (undesired) pregnancies is another clear sign that protection has not been taken. The HIV/Aids preventative educational programs led by V-Glob in May - December of 2004 in colleges and hairdressing training centres gave us a vast amount of useful information · The students and apprentices are financially prevented from buying both male and female condoms in order to protect themselves. · The varying costs of male condoms make them have doubts concerning the quality and the way in which it relates to ‘pleasure’ (diminished pleasure for lesser quality condoms). · The students and apprentices find that screening costs that range from 500fcfa to 5000fcfa is too expensive. .The young girls especially apprentices cannot discuuss the use of condom with their partners. They said they willl be seen as "spoil/bad girl" -The student are more at ease to discuss about sex education with the presence of their teachers than apprentices . These points raised by the students and apprentices are clearly very pertinent. We have also tried to do research into the strategies uses by other countries to diminish their rates of prevalence. We found that in the majority of these countries: · Screening is completely free with no expenses for any of the social classes. · There are centres where anybody can go to obtain free condoms in order to protect themselves. This ethic is without doubt something we would wish to copy and, if possible, try to improve.
The General Objective of this Action project as indicated by its title is to give youth the opportunity to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies that prevent young girls from continuing their education. -Reinforce the prevention campaigns -Initiate research to unsderstand behaviour of people in frame of the HIV/Aids education Description In order to realise and execute this action no.1, we decided to: · Offer 3 free condoms to each person in need each time that they ask us · Offer primary advice on matters of health, re-production and the prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases to the youth who come to us. · We are preparing a HIV/Aids awareness and prevention education tageted artisans
The V-Glob office situated in Djidjolé (not far from FavoNet) serves us in the framework of the Action N.1 as the centre of this project. The offer of condoms is available every day between 10am and 8pm. At least one volunteer of VGlob is available permanently. We estimate that, for the beginning, we will receive around 20 demands each day. This is a minimum of 60 units (20´3 units) of condoms to offer each day. The length of this project is limitless. We plan to begin in the beginning of the month of February 2005. How can I support this Action No.1 Everybody, with no distinction of race or origin, is able to support and participate in realisation of this present action by deciding to: · Supplying condoms · Supplying leaflets on Sexually Transmitted Diseases · Helping us makes posters, t-shirts, or work-books with messages that support our action and attract attention · Present this project of Action No.1 to certain organisations and institutions or good-willed people who are able to undertake the financing of such a project. · Become a permanent volunteer at V-Glob to take on the role of condom distribution to those in need. · Become a volunteer of VGlob as Assistant-Coordinator of this Action Project no.1 · Become a volunteer at V-Glob who prepares and organises discussion groups for youth.
